This painting was first inspired by a mudbug that escaped from a crawfish boil at a local bar and grill. He’d made it all the way from the kitchen at the back of the restaurant to the front window before a waitress went to pick him up. He fought valiantly but she was victorious and he went back to the kitchen to await a boiling hot bath. I couldn’t help but think it was an unfair fight much like the story of David and Goliath. If it had been a proper bar fight he’d have a broken bottle as a weapon. After the initial inspiration I changed the scene to outdoors as most of the crawfish boils I’ve enjoyed have been in someone’s yard, and that seemed to lend a second interpretation to the piece, one of nature reminding us to clean up our act and our litter.
