Beauty in Falling Apart

$450.00

24″ x 18″

“Beauty in Falling Apart” celebrates the beauty found in the broken spaces of our lives.  The upper folded book is the original form, only slightly damaged (by life).  The bottom form is the same shape, but crystallized, then broken, and recrystallized, into a beautiful but wholly different shape.  54 cranes fly from the broken spaces — wisdom and grace set free.

The piece is made of repurposed books.  The crystallizing solution is borax (old fashioned laundry detergent).  There are 54 cranes because 54 = 3 X 18; 18 is Chai in Hebrew — which means life.  Gifts given in multiples of 18 impart additional blessings and good fortune.  The cranes are folded from mulberry paper and about half the cranes are hand-painted with water colors.
