This “vase” is approximately 12” tall and 10” in diameter with a 6” origami kusudama ball, representing a flower, inserted in the top.
The piece is named “Valuable” because, superficially, it is not. The piece asks us to question what is valuable and what makes a thing valuable. The vase itself is folded from a discarded Restoration Hardware catalogue. (Restoration Hardware markets high end, expensive household products.) The flower is crafted from paper shopping receipts. The vase has been crystallized using Borax (a non-toxic laundry detergent). The crystals have been sealed with a polyurethane spray. The vase was soaked in a super-saturated solution of Borax for about 24 hours, twice, and then allowed to dry for several weeks.
